The Elms Backyard

A visit to Newport, Rhode Island included a tour of the Summer home of coal magnate Edward Julius Berwind from Philadelphia. With no children of their own, Mr. Berwind’s sister continued to use the home, after the death of Mr. and Mrs. Berwind. She would allow neighborhood children to play in the back yard, and the butler would bring out milk and cookies. At the butler’s signal, the children would all stop playing and turn toward the house for a wave from Miss Julia.
